Illinois Fighting Illini Football Recruiting: Joe Fotu Gives Verbal Commitment to Illinois

It’s been Tim Beckman’s plan since his arrival at Illinois to add depth through recruiting JUCO players. On Tuesday, the Illinois Fighting Illini were able to add some more depth at a position that needs dire help when 2014 defensive end Joe Fotu gave defensive line coach Greg Colby his verbal commitment.

Fotu chose the Illini over the Arizona State Sun Devils and New Mexico Lobos. He visited all three school this month before making his decision.

Derek Piper of Illini247 had this to say about Joe Fotu’s ability on the field:

Fotu is an athletic weak-side defensive end, who combines strength and quickness in his pursuit. He is deceptively fast off the ball, and was able to burst through the line with relative ease in his JUCO game film.

As a sophomore at Laney College, Fotu registered 23 tackles, 5.5 sacks, 2.5 sacks, two fumble recoveries, and a forced fumble.

Joe Fotu becomes the sixteenth commitment for Tim Beckman and company, and is also the fifth JUCO commit as well.

The three-star recruit is currently ranked 64th in the state of California, 13th among weak-side defensive ends, and 210th among 2014 JUCO recruits by 247Sports.
