On Tuesday, American Volleyball Coaches Association announced their Division I All-Region awards. Two players from the Illinois Fighting Illini that were named to the All-Northeast Region teams were sophomore Jocelynn Briks and senior Jennifer Beltran. In addition, junior Liz McMahon was named an honorable mention.
The award is the first in the career of Birks who earned a unanimous All-Big Ten honor following the regular season. The sophomore outside hitter ranks fifth in the Big Ten and 40th in the nation in kills per set, fourth in the Big Ten and 38th in the nation in points, and was fourth in both categories during conference play.
For Beltran, the award is her first postseason honor since her rookie season (All-Mideast Region Honorable Mention). The senior leader of the Fighting Illini ranks third in the Big Ten in digs per set, and became the team’s all-time career digs leader while moving into second place all-time in Big Ten history.
McMahon picked up her second honorable mention of the year after being named an All-Big Ten Honorable Mention this season.
According to fightingillini.com, Illini head coach Kevin Hambly said:
“I’m a little disappointed that Liz, but she has another year to try and make it in there and has the potential become an All-American.”
The #12 Illinois Fighting Illini will play the Purdue Boilermakers on Friday, December 13th at 6:00 p.m. (CST) in the Sweet 16 of the National Tournament.
