Illinois V.S. Penn State: Key Quotes From Illini Players

Quarterback Nathan Scheelhaase

Can you take us through that last play of overtime?

“It was a bad play on my part. I didn’t see the corner drop back off as I was checking back. It’s as simple as that.”

What did you do today that had success in taking advantage of Penn State’s defense?

“We just thought that there were some holes where our guys were going to be able to beat their guys. We felt good about our receivers and our tight end group just making plays on their defensive backs and linebackers. We really did that all day. It wasn’t a situation where we felt that we were slow at times or felt like we weren’t able to do things. We really felt that we were able to do what we needed to, but just didn’t make enough plays to win.”

Spencer Harris made a lot of catches for the team. What can you say about him?

“He’s a great player. I’ve been playing with him for four years and he is a guy where you know what you’re going to get from him every time he is out there. He’s a hard-nosed guy. He’s going to be in the right spot at the right time. He’s always making plays. He’s definitely missed out there. We miss his athletic ability and his spirit.”

What happened on that first-quarter interception?

“We put ourselves in a bad position by getting a penalty there, which backed us up. Then we just tried to force one in there a little bit, which was a turnover on their side of the 50-yard line and you obviously don’t want that. You want to come up with some kind of points. We can’t shoot ourselves in the foot, especially early on.”

Linebacker Jonathan Brown

Does the whole team feel differently about this game as opposed to Michigan State or another?

“A loss is a loss. It hurts, regardless (of the team). This loss just probably stings a little bit more since it was so close.”

Do you think this is the best the defense has played this year?

“I think this is our most complete game. I felt like we played four quarters together. We just couldn’t put that fifth one together. It was right there.”

The team was making some stops in the later part of the game. What was different between today and the other games?

“We put together a whole week of practice. Going into this week, we had a little extra motivation, but this is the first time I can say that throughout the whole game we did our assignments. Everybody did their jobs and it showed. Once everyone does their job, we’re a really good defense.”
