Illinois V.S. Wisconsin: Badgers Lead Illini 28-17 At The Half

After a dismal first quarter, the Illinois Fighting Illini came back strong in the 2nd quarter and trail the #25 Wisconsin Badgers 28-17 at the half.

The Illini were able to score the first 10 points of the second quarter after Taylor Zalewski kicked a 31 yard field goal on the team’s first drive of the quarter (continued over from first quarter) and Josh Ferguson was able to get into the endzone the the Illini’s next drive after a Wisconsin punt.

Wisconsin didn’t back down as Melvin Gordon was able to score his second touchdown of the game with 1:55 left in the half. However, Illinois march right back.

On their last drive of the half, Nathan Scheelhaase threw a 39 yard bomb to Ryan Lankford to get the Fighting Illini to the Wisconsin 4 yardline. Then, Aaron Bailey pulled his best “Tim Tebow” with the fake QB draw and threw a touchdown pass to Matt LaCosse to pull the Illini within 11 points.

After throwing for only 37 yards in the first quarter, Scheelhaase enters halftime with 155 passing yards on eleven completions. The Illini rushing attack will need to get going in the second half as the team’s leading rusher at the half is Aaron Bailey with eight yards on the ground.

It will be interesting to see how the Wisconsin defense responds in the second half to a key injury. Linebacker Chris Bolland left the game in the first quarter and did not return in the second quarter. The Badgers haven’t looked the same on defense since he left the game and it will be interesting to see if he returns at all in this game.
