The Illinois Fighting Illini are off to a nice start to start the season, and their efforts are not going unnoticed as the team moved up from #18 to #14 on the AVCA Rankings this Monday.
The Illini started their week on Friday against the #14 San Diego Toreros in Ames, Iowa for the Iowa State Challenge. Illinois lost to the Toreros, 3-1. Despite losing, Jocelynn Birks and and Liz McMahon led the Illini attack with 18 and 14 kills respectively.
According to fightingillini.com, “Birks struggled with accuracy early in the match, tallying five errors in the first set, but finished by going 8-for-13 with no missteps in the fourth frame to give Illinois an opportunity to send the match to five.”
In their second match of the week, the Illini were able to sweep the #11 Iowa State Cyclones.
Illinois was hitting on all cylinders in the match as the team hit a season-best .303 in the match and were led by senior Courtney Abrahamovich with three hits, along with two hits each for Liz McMahon and Ali Stark.
