Illinois V.S. Cincinnati: Illini Lead Bearcats 7-0 After First Quarter

All week, Illini fans heard about the Cincinnati pass rush and what Bearcats quarterback Munchie Legaux can do with both his arm and his legs. However, after the first quarter, the Illini are the ones that are leading the Bearcats, 7-0.

Just like their game against SIU, Illinois received the kick to begin the game, and the offense looked good early. Nathan Scheelhaase led the team down into Cincinnati territory, but the team had to punt to end the drive.

The game was tied at zero until just after the six minute when Scheelhaase hit running back Josh Ferguson for a 48 yard touchdown which had the announcers on ESPN2 saying that Ferguson was “Reggie Bush-like.”

It was that moment that shifted the momentum into the Illini’s favor even on defense.

On the next drive for the Bearcats, Munchie Legaux got his team to their own 38 yard line, but threw a costly interception to Taylor Barton on 3rd down to give Illinois the ball back. Legaux was pulled from the game by Tommy Tuberville after the interception.

After the first half, Illinois quarterback Nathan Scheelhaase has completed 11 out of his 14 passes and has throw for 111 yards and one touchdown.
