Football season is finally here as the Illinois Fighting Illini are hosting the Southern Illinois Salukis at Memorial Stadium to kickoff the 2013 season.
Illinois received to open up their 2013 campaign. Nathan Scheelhaase looked good from the start. On his first pass, the senior quarterback connected deep down the field to senior wide receiver Ryan Lankford.
However, Illinois could only get the ball to SIU’s 15 yard line and had to settle for a Taylor Zalewski 33 yard field goal.
The Illini defense also looked good on their first drive on the season as well, but gave up a costly touchdown on their second drive. Southern Illinois’ junior running back Milka’il McCall ran the ball in for a touchdown after a 39 yard pass from Kory Faulkner to John Lantz.
The Illini offense got back down the field and scored what looked to be a go-ahead touchdown, but a holding penalty brought them back.
They looked to be settling for a field goal, but Zalewski missed the 32 yard attempt.
Illini nation also got their first look at true freshman QB Aaron Bailey to end the quarter. Bailey took a quarterback keeper 4 yards on a rush over the left guard.
