After some first quarter struggles, the Illinois Fighting Illini picked things up in a HUGE way in the second quarter against the Southern Illinois Salukis.
It started on Illinois’ second offensive drive of the quarter as Josh Ferguson took a Nathan Scheelhaase screen pass 53 yards to the house to put the Fighting Illini up 10-7 in the game.
The momentum didn’t stop there as the Illini defense picked things up on SIU’s following offensive drive.
Salukis quarterback Kory Faulkner kept the ball on a QB rush, but Illinois’ senior DL Tim Kynard laid down a big hit to force a fumble that the Illini would recover.
It would only take the Fighting Illini two plays to score again.
First, Scheelhaase thew a 28 yard pass to WR Ryan Lankford, and then running back Donovonn Young finished the Illinois drive with a 2 yard TD run over the right tackle to push the Illini lead to 17-7.
Illinois would score once more on their last drive of the half.
Instead of running out the clock, OC Bill Cubit decided to go for SIU’s throat. The Fighting Illini marched down the field and scored a touchdown on a pass from Scheelhaase to tight end Jon Davis. Then, the Illini would convert a 2-point conversion to follow on a pass from Tim Russell to Matt LaCosse.
Illinois is on top 25-7 at the half and Nathan Scheelhaase in the reason why. Scheelhaase has thrown for 340 yards and two touchdowns and is on pace to set the single game passing record for the Fighting Illini.
