The PGA Tour season is down to 100 players to win the coveted FedEx Cup and claim the $10 million grand prize, and this season has had it’s up’s and down’s.
Tiger Woods has been the main story with his continuing major drought, but still winning the most on tour and undoubtedly going to win the Player of the Year trophy.
With all the news headlines about Tiger and other big name golfers, there has been one point of interest that no one is following. The constant competitiveness that Illinois Fighting Illini alumni golfers have shown in tournaments this year.
D.A. Points is heading the Illini fight to the FedEx Cup Championship. D.A. is currently sitting in 15th place among the 100 participants left in the cup chase.
Points, a 1999 graduate, has also had the lone win for the Illini crew this year with a victory at the Shell Houston Open.
Steve Stricker is right behind D.A. in the standings. Stricker is sitting in 28th and is still in striking distance of the leader, Tiger. Stricker has had an okay season, but a win at the Deutsche Bank Championship would make for his first of the season and a pivotal win in his cup run.
Young, up-and-coming, golfer Luke Guthrie is the third Illini Alum in the field for the FedEx Cup. Guthrie is a 23-year-old that is not getting the spot light that he should be. He is currently in 81st, but many people would love to be in his position.
The Illini trio has hopes to win the FedEx Cup this year, but will have to finish strong to take down Tiger. The solid play of these three has landed them a total of 10 top 10′s, 5 top 3′s, and a victory.
This solid year will only be the start of great things to come for Illini golf.
