After dropping their first season opener since 2007 on Friday, the Illinois Fighting Illini will face off against the Louisville Cardinals at Cardinal Park Soccer Stadium today.
Illinois will be looking to bounce back after losing their season opener to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, 4-1. Notre Dame scored three first half goals, and added one more after Illinois netted their first goal of the game.
The Louisville Cardinals come into today’s game with an overall record of 1-0 and are 1-0 at Cardinal Park Soccer Stadium. They were able to shut out the Butler Bulldogs in their home opener on Friday.
Louisville was picked to win the American Athletic Conference and returns a strong lineup including Preseason Team selections Charlyn Corral (a unanimous selection) and Angelika Uremovich.
In the season opener against Butler, Corral took four out of the Cardinals nine shots and scored one of their two goals. In 2012, she led the team offensively with 23 points and had eight goals and seven assists.
This will be 5th meeting between the Fighting Illini and the Cardinals. Illinois leads the series 4-0 and owns a 15-1 goal advantage in those four games.
Illinois will need to pick up their offensive gameplay if they want to get their first win of the season. In their season opener, their only goal came off the bench as Casey Conine netted the team’s only goal.
The Fighting Illini also have a reputation of outscoring Louisville when the two teams face off. However, after seeing the Illini play against ND on Friday, fans shouldn’t be surprised if the outcome of Sunday’s game is the other way around.
