Earlier this week, Illinois punter Justin DuVernois was named to the preseason watch list for the 2013 Ray Guy Award.
The Ray Guy Award is the collegiate award that honors the nation’s top collegiate punter. It is named after former Southern Miss and Oakland Raiders punter Ray Guy.
DuVernois joins 24 other college punters for the preseason list. He joins fellow Big Ten punters Mike Sadler from Michigan State and Cody Webster from Purdue on the list. He will look to become the first Illinois punter and the third ever Big Ten punter to win the award.
Justin DuVernois is coming off of a very nice sophomore season in 2012. He ranked fourth in the Big Ten and 41st in the nation in punting last season with a 41.9 yards per punt average.
Fifteen of his punts went at least 50 yards which included a career-long 72-yard boot in the season-opener against Western Michigan.
Earlier this offseason, Justin DuVernois was named to the College Football Performance Awards punter watch list and was a second-team preseason All-Big Ten selection by Phil Steele.
