On Monday at 11 a.m. CT, it was announced that the Illinois Fighting Illini season would stay alive as the team earned a selection to the NCAA Tournament. The 2013 tournament selection is the Illini’s second regional berth in the past three years. They reached the championship game of the NCAA Fullerton Regional in 2011.
Illinois was placed in the Nashville Regional and will be the No. 3 seed. The Nashville Regional also consists of the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (No. 2 seed), East Tennessee State Buccaneers (No. 4 seed), and Vanderbilt Commodores (No. 1 seed).
The first opponent for Illinois will be No. 2 seed Georgia Tech (34-25). The regional is a double elimination bracket. The Fighting Illini will face the Yellow Jackets in the first game at Hawkins Field on Friday, May 31, at 1 p.m. CT, which will be broadcast on ESPN3.
Illinois earned an at-large bid after recording their most wins in a season since 2000. This tournament appearance will mark the Illini’s 10th in school history and first since 2011.
Illinois and Indiana were the only Big Ten teams selected for the NCAA Tournament.
