Illinois Softball: Southern Illinois Game Preview

The Illinois Fighting Illini are on a tear right now, winning eight in a row, as over the weekend they brought out the brooms for the sweep against the Spartans of Michigan State.

Winning all three games in convincing fashion, they are continuing to climb the ranks in the Big Ten, as they now hold a 9-11 record in the conference. Their 9-11 record puts them at eighth in the conference.

The Illini now turn their attention to the Southern Illinois Salukis (24-25, 12-10 MVC).

Kara Kimball is a solid hitter for Southern Illinois, batting .500 on the season. Yes, that stat is right. For every plate appearance, she has a 50% chance of getting a hit and that stat alone should worry the Fighting Illini, as that is a dangerous opponent to go up against.

However, a good thing for Illinois may be the lack of dominant pitching for Southern Illinois. The Salukis only have one pitcher, Katie Bertelsen, with an ERA below 4.00 (3.27). If the Illini continue hitting the way they are currently, then that could spell disaster for the SIU.

Allie Bauch, the Big Ten Freshman of the Week, is a big reason why the Illini went a perfect 5-0 last week. She hit .412 with six RBI’s and two stolen bases.

Final Prediction: 12-2 win for the Fighting Illini
