During the seventh round of the NFL Draft, the New England Patriots selected Illinois defensive end Michael Buchanan with the 226th overall pick.
Entering the draft, Buchanan was projected to be drafted in the late third round or early fourth round, but slipped all the way to the end of day three.
He joins a Pats draft class that has OLB Jamie Collins (Southern Miss), WR Aaron Dobson (Marshall), CB LoganRyan (Rutgers), S Duron Harmon (Rutgers), and WR Josh Boyce (TCU).
The speculation that made teams nervous of Buchanan was his down year in 2012.
Over the offseason before his senior season, Buchanan was involved in an altercation that left him with a broken jaw that was wired shut for a week. Because of this, he went on an all-liquid diet and lost around twenty pounds.
This led to a disappointing senior year for Buchanan and teams are wondering if he can get back to form like the player we all saw in 2011.
I originally thought the New England Patriots were going to take Buchanan during day two, but they passed on him. Michael Buchanan fits with the Pats because they need a pass rusher and that is exactly what they get in Buchanan.
Michael Buchanan has an excellent first step, can run the arc, and flashes the flexibility to turn the corner. The only thing he needs to do is bulk up and he should be able to do that at the next level.
