The University of Illinois announced on Friday that offensive lineman Corey Lewis had a sixth year of eligibility granted to him by the NCAA for the 2013 season. He received a medical hardship waiver from the NCAA on Friday and had missed a total of 1,076 days and 34 games during his injury.
Lewis missed the 2010 and 2011 seasons after tearing his ACL a total of three times.
He’s had five total knee surgeries and subsequent rehabilitation.
Lewis saw his first action of the 2012 season come on November 3rd against the Ohio State Buckeyes. He played 25 snaps against Ohio State and played some good minutes in Illinois’ final three games of the 2012 season.
Corey Lewis is listed as the starter at the right tackle position following spring practice. He was named the Bresee Most Improved Offensive Player after the 2013 Blue and Orange Spring Game.
He is also a two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection (2009 and 2012).
