The Illinois Fighting Illini were swept by the Northwestern Wildcats after losing the series finale, 7-1, on Sunday.
Illinois is now riding a five-game losing streak and have lost nine of their last ten games. The last game the Illini won was the second game of the doubleheader against #24 Nebraska on March 30th.
Illinois struck first on Sunday by scoring in the first inning on a single to first by Jessica Davis. This RBI was set up after Alex Booker layed down a sacrifice bunt to put Allie Bauch in scoring position.
However, the game got out of hand in the fourth and fifth innings as Northwestern scored a total of seven runs. Illinois starter Shelese Arnold gave up only two runs through four innings, but all that came apart in the bottom of the fifth. She was pulled after giving up five runs and getting only one out in the fifth. Pepper Gay came in and threw a solid 1.2 innings in relief.
When asked about Sunday’s pitching, head coach Terri Sullivan said,
Shelese pitched with a purpose today and kept the lead for four innings. Pepper was strong and gutsy in relief.
The one player to cause havoc for Northwestern was Mari Majam. She went 3-for-3 with a walk, a run and sacrifice bunt.
The Wildcats also had three players go deep on Sunday. Those players were: Marisa Bast, Andrea DiPrima, and Amy Letourneau.
Letourneau led the Wildcats on the mound. She threw a complete-game where she allowed four hits and seven walks. She also struck out eight Illinois batters.
The Illinois Fighting Illini are now 11-21 overall and 1-8 in the Big Ten this season.
The Illinois Fighting Illini will play their next game against the Eastern Illinois Panthers. They will play the Panthers on April 9th at 4:00 p.m. (CST).
