The Illinois Fighting Illini lost to the Indiana State Sycamores, 6-5, in the only game of their one game series on Wednesday.
Illinois lead by two runs after the third inning, but found themselves trailing 6-2 in the bottom of the seventh.
The bottom of the seventh couldn’t have started out any better for the Illini.
Jess Perkins led off the inning with a single to the shortstop and advanced to second base after Remeny Perez was hit by a pitch. Then, with two on and no outs, Jessica Davis hit a three-run shot over the scoreboard to pull the Illini within one.
However, Illinois was not able to score the game-tying run after getting a runner on first with still no outs.
The winning pitcher for Indiana State was Halle Humphrey.
The win was her first victory of the season and she is now 1-5 on the year. She gave up five runs on ten hits and struck out seven batters through 6.0 innings. Ashley Dickerson got her first save of the season for the Sycamores.
The losing pitcher for Illinois was Pepper Gay.
Gay pitched six strong innings and only gave up four runs on six hits. However, the rest of her team could not get her off the hook and she is now 6-11 on the season.
The Illinois Fighting Illini are now 11-18 this season.
The Illinois Fighting Illini will play their next game against the Northwestern Wildcats. They will play the Wildcats on April 5th, 6th, and 7th.
