The Illinois Fighting Illini had their six game win streak snapped on Sunday after they lost to Texas-Arlington, 6-5.
Illinois defeated the Mavericks in their first meeting on Saturday, 7-3. However, Sunday’s game was a lot tougher of a game which had the Illini fighting from behind.
In the bottom of the fifth, Texas-Arlington scored three runs and jumped out to a 5-0 lead.
The first two runs scored with the bases loaded. Darien McLemore and Travis Sibley scored on a Matt Shortall single to right field. Then, Ryan Walker scored when Derek Miller singled to left field.
Although, the Fighting Illini came roaring back in the top of the seventh. They scored five runs to tie the game.
The first run came when David Kerian scored off a Brandon Hohl single to left field. Then, Thomas Lindauer scored when Reid Roper singled on a hit to the right side. Hohl scored the third run of the inning after Ryan Nagle pinch hit and singled to right field. The final two runs of the inning came when Roper and Will Krug scored off a Michael Hurwitz double down the right field line.
The Mavericks would answer in the bottom of the eighth when Daniel Garcia hit a RBI sac fly to right field.
The winning pitcher for Texas-Arlington was Chad Nack. He came in relief for starting pitcher, Brad Vachon, in the seventh inning. He gave up only one run on three hits. Nack is 2-1 on the season.
The losing pitcher for Illinois was Rob McDonnell. McDonnell pitched for only one inning and was pulled in the eighth after UTA scored off of their RBI sac fly. He is 0-1 on the season.
The Illinois Fighting Illini are now 7-4 this season.
The Illinois Fighting Illini will play their next game against the Baylor Bears. They will play the Bears on Friday, March 8 followed by a doubleheader on Saturday, March 9.
