Football Recruiting: Dawuane Smoot Signs LOI with Illinois

The Illinois Fighting Illini signed their first commit on National Signing Day, Dawuane Smoot. Smoot is a three-star recruit by Rivals, ESPN and 247 Sports. He is also ranked as the No. 68 defensive end in the nation by 247 Sports.

Smoot committed to Illinois on June 26th, 2012. He chose Illinois over teams such as Ball State and Indiana. Although, Illinois’ first-year Recruiting Coordinator, Alex Golesh, earned Smoot’s pledge.

Dawuane Smoot played his high school ball at Groveport Madison High School in Groveport, Ohio. The Groveport Cruisers had a rough season in 2012. They went 1-9 overall and 0-7 in their conference. As a senior, he had 91 tackles, 14 sacks, five forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. He was the defensive MVP at Madison as a junior and senior and All-Metro second-team selection as a senior.

Out of the twelve signees that Illinois has at this moment, Smoot was the very first to fax in his Letter of Intent. Even though he was the first signee, he is one of three defensive tackles to sign with the Illini on NSD.
