The Illinois Fighting Illini will travel to Lincoln, Nebraska to play the Nebraska Cornhuskers on January 17th.
The Illini are coming off of a home loss to Michigan State. Senior Arienne GodBold scored a career-high 28 points, but the Illini missed eight of its last nine free throws to lose 75-79.
The star of the Fighting Illini was also not herself against MSU. Senior Karisma Penn is averaging 14.7 points per game this season, but only scored eight points against the Spartans. She went 3-of-8 from the field and fouled out of the game after playing 23 minutes.
The Cornhuskers are 1-2 in their last three games. They are 12-5 overall and are 2-2 in the Big Ten. They lost pretty badly against Penn State, 58-80, in their last game.
Nebraska has two player averaging double-digits coming into their game against Illinois.
Senior Lindsey Moore and junior Jordan Hooper are the top two on the team with 15.2 and 17.9 points per game respectively.
However, in their last game against the Nittany Lions, neither Moore or Hooper led the Cornhuskers in scoring. The leading scorer was sophomore Emily Cady. She went 5-of-10 from the field and 3-of-4 from beyond the arc to score 17 points.
When it comes down to rebounding, Hooper and Cady are among the best on the team.
Hooper is averaging 9.1 rebounds per game which ranks her third in the Big Ten. Cady is averaging 7.5 rebounds per game (2nd on the Cornhuskers).
Both Hooper and Cady led the team with nine rebounds each in the game against Penn State. As a team, Nebraska rebounds the ball well. They are ranked second in the conference in rebounding margin (+5.5 per game).
This will be 7th meeting between the Fighting Illini and the Cornhuskers. Nebraska leads the brief series 4-2. In last year’s meeting, the Cornhuskers defeated the Illini, 67-47.
Just like the men’s basketball team, the Fighting Illini had a surprisingly “poor” performance from their star senior. Karisma Penn only scored eight points and hauled in four rebounds against Michigan State.
Expect both basketball teams for Illinois to receive great games from their stars. Brandon Paul should be back to form on Thursday against Northwestern and Karisma Penn should be the exact same when the Cornhuskers and the Illini face off tonight.
