The Illinois Fighting Illini will travel to Columbus, Ohio to play the Ohio State Buckeyes.
The Illini are coming off of an overtime loss to the Purdue Boilermakers where they lost after Kersten Magrum missed a last second jumper to end the game.
Ohio State will come into the game with an overall record of 10-4 and a conference record of 0-1. They lost to the Iowa Hawkeyes, 71-77, in their last game.
The Buckeyes are happy to be returning to Value City Arena after their road game against Iowa. They have won a school-record 31 consecutive home games. This school-record dates back to the 2010-2011 season. This is the second longest-streak behind Baylor’s 46 straight home wins.
Ohio State is led on offense by their senior guard Tayler Hill. Hill is averaging 20.4 points per game which is 3rd in the conference. She has started in all fourteen of OSU’s games thus far and is averaging 33.1 minutes per contest. Although Ohio State lost to Iowa, Hill had a career night. She scored a career-high 34 points which included four 3-pointers.
The rebounding leader for the Buckeyes is junior center Ashley Adams. Adams has played in only thirteen games (started all thirteen) this season and is averaging 6.9 boards per contest.
However, Ohio State’s biggest strength is clearly their defense. They are ranked 3rd in the Big Ten and 23rd nationally in scoring defense at 51.4 points per game allowed. They are also outscoring opponents by an average of 18.2 points per game.
Hill and Adams are also very good defensively for the Buckeyes. Adams leads the team with 2.5 blocks per game. She is 3rd in the Big Ten behind Karisma Penn (Illinois) and Cassie Rochel (Wisconsin). Hill leads the team in steal and is averaging 2.6 steals per contest.
This will be the 63rd meeting between the Fighting Illini and the Buckeyes. The Buckeyes hold the overall advantage in the series 44-18. They are also 23-4 against the Illini in Columbus. In their last meeting, Illinois defeated Ohio State, 66-65.
Just like the men’s basketball team, the Fighting Illini are looking for a bounce back win after losing to the Purdue Boilermakers. Illinois played well against Purdue, but could not just get the win.
If they want to beat the Buckeyes, they will need to clamp down defensively throughout the entire game. If the Illini can outscore Ohio State in the paint and off turnovers, they should be able to get the win in Columbus.
