It was not a good night for Big Ten volleyball in the Final Four of the national tournament. Both Penn State and Michigan had a chance to move on to the championship game, but came up short.
Here’s a look at how each Big Ten team fared in the Final Four of the tournament:
#1 Penn State Nittany Lions (34-3) - In their Final Four match, the Nittany Lions played the #5 Oregon Ducks. Penn State won the first set, but Oregon won the next three sets because of an extended second set win. The Ducks defeated the Nittany Lions in four sets, 21-25, 30-28, 25-22, and 24-19. Despite losing the match, PSU got nice performances from Deja McClendon and Ariel Scott.
McClendon recorded 14 kills and two solo blocks in the match. Scott led the team with 18 kills and assists on five blocks.
Penn State failed to win two championships in three years while Oregon reaches the championship for the very first time.
Michigan Wolverines (27-11) – Michigan has been the Cinderella of this year’s national tournament. However, the storybook ending could not be written as Texas knocked off the Wolverines in the Final Four. After being dominated in the first set, Michigan won the next two sets to make it a 2-1 match. However, Texas pulled out strong to beat Michigan in five sets, 25-11, 21-25, 23,25, 25-12, and 11-9.
Michigan was led on offense by their all-star Lexi Erwin. She recorded a team-high 26 kills in the match. Lexi Dannemiller also had 50 assists for the Wolverines.
#3 Texas and #5 Oregon will play for the National Championship on December 15th in Louisville, Kentucky. That game can be seen on ESPN2.
