Big Ten Volleyball: Final Four Preview

The Final Four of the 2012 Women’s Volleyball Tournament will begin on Thursday. Only two Big Ten teams remain and will look to maybe face each other in the National Championship game in Louisville, Kentucky.

Here is a look at the Final Four for each Big Ten team:

#1 Penn State Nittany Lions (34-2) - The top-ranked Nittany Lions have only loss one set through their first four games of this year’s tournament. They had no problems as they swept Binghamton, Bowling Green, and #16 Kentucky. However, it was the #8 Minnesota Golden Gophers that were able to at least take one set from the top team.

Three players that were big for the Nittany Lions in their quarterfinals match were Ariel Scott, Deja McClendon, and Megan Courtney. They all had double-digit kills in the match. McClendon also recorded a total of seven blocks.

The Nittany Lions will play the #5 Oregon Ducks in the Final Four of the tournament.

Michigan Wolverines (27-11) – The road to the Final Four for the Wolverines has been filled with upsets. Before any of their upsets during the tournament, they almost lost to Tennessee, but pulled out victorious in five sets. After that, Michigan defeated #10 Louisville, Michigan State, and #2 Stanford.

In their quarterfinals match against #2 Stanford, the Wolverines had four players with double-digits kills. Lexi Erwin led the team with 23 kills while Jennifer Cross, Clarie McElheny, and Molly Toon recorded 15, 11, and 12 kills respectively.

Michigan will play #3 Texas in the Final Four.
