Illinois Football Recruiting: David Guthrie Commits to Illinois

Illinois picked up another commitment on Tuesday. 2013 three-star safety David Guthrie decided to commit to the Illinois Fighting Illini. He choose the Illini over offers from New Mexico and Houston (was set to visit the Cougars on December 14th).

Guthrie is a 5’11″, 200 pound safety from Weed, California. He played this last season at the College of the Siskiyous. He recorded 53 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, five interceptions (one for a touchdown), and one forced fumble this season.

He is highly-regarded for his ball skills as well as his overall instincts.

Guthrie is ranked 56th in the state of California, 10th among safeties, and 165th among junior college recruits by 247Sports.

He will be a nice addition for the Illinois Fighting Illini. The defense did not look very good this past season. They were ranked tenth for total defense (387.6 yards per game), tenth for rushing defense (193.9 yards per game), but fifth for passing defense (193.7 yards per game).

The Fighting Illini have 27 commitments from the class of 2013.
