The quarterfinals of the 2012 Women’s Volleyball Tournament kicked off on Saturday. Four Big Ten teams made it to the quarterfinals. However, not all four teams made it to the “Final Four.”
Here’s a look at how each Big Ten team fared in the quarterfinals of the tournament:
#1 Penn State Nittany Lions (34-2) - In their quarterfinals match, the Nittany Lions played the #8 Minnesota Golden Gophers. Penn State defeated Minnesota in four sets, 25-19, 19-25, 26-24, and 25-20. They had three players record double-digit kills in the match. Ariel Scott led the team with 23 kills, but Deja McClendon and Megan Courtney had 14 and 11 kills respectively. McClendon also recorded a total of seven blocks. The Nittany Lions will play the #5 Oregon Ducks in the Final Four of the tournament.
#4 Nebraska Cornhuskers (26-7) – Nebraska faced off against the #5 Oregon Ducks in the quarterfinals of the tournament on Saturday. The Ducks defeat the Cornhuskers in four sets, 25-15, 22-25, 18-25, and 17-25. Nebraska’s offense was led by Gina Mancuso and Hannah Werth. Mancuso recorded 16 kills while Werth recorded 10 kills. Lauren Cook had 46 assists and Hayley Thramer had 5 total blocks in the match.
#8 Minnesota Golden Gophers (27-8) - Just like Nebraska, #8 Minnesota did not make it to the Final Four on Saturday. They were defeated by the top-seeded Nittany Lions. Katherine Harms was the only Minnesota player to record double-digit kills with 17. The Golden Gophers out-blocked the Naittany Lions, but still lost in the end. Dana Knudsen assisted on six blocks.
Michigan Wolverines (27-11) – The upsets keep on coming for the Michigan Wolverines. First, they knocked off #10 Louisville in the second round. In the quarterfinals, they upset #2 Stanford in four sets, 20-25, 25-20, 25-20, and 25-20. Michigan had four players with double-digit kills. Lexi Erwin led the team with 23 kills while Jennifer Cross, Clarie McElheny, and Molly Toon recorded 15, 11, and 12 kills respectively. The Cardinal out-blocked the Wolverines, but could not avoid the upset. Michigan will play #3 Texas in the Final Four next week.
