The No. 22 Illinois Fighting Illini defeated the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 75-62 in their ACC/Big Ten Challenge game. Because of this victory, the Illini are now 7-7 overall, 4-2 at home, and 5-4 when ranked during the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.
The Fighting Illini led the Yellow Jackets by one point at halftime and things got rough for them in the second half. At one point in the second half, Illinois trailed Georgia Tech 58-54. However, just when it looked like Illinois was giving the game to Georgia Tech, Joseph Bertrand sparked his team.
The junior guard knocked down 3-pointers on consecutive possessions while scoring every single point during his team’s 10-0 run in the second half. The run started at 10-0, but turned into a 21-4 run by the end of the game.
Bertrand played 22 minutes off the bench for the Illini. He went 6-of-8 from the field and 3-of-4 from beyond the arc while scoring 15 points. He scored 12 of his 15 points in the second half.
Another player for the Illini to have a good game on Wednesday was Brandon Paul. Paul finished the game with seven rebounds, seven assists, and 15 points. He has scored double-digit points in every game this season.
Two more players for Illinois to score double-digit points were D.J. Richardson and Tyler Griffey. They both finished the game with 14 points apiece and Richardson went 4-of-7 from beyond the arc.
Georgia Tech did not play great ball down the stretch and lost the game. Their leading scorer was Kammeon Holsey with 14 points off the bench.
The Fighting Illini are now 8-0 on the season.
Their next game will be at home against the Western Carolina Catamounts on December 4th. Western Carolina is currently 3-4 on the season. They defeated Furman 79-65 in their last game.
