Illini fans can find themselves fortunate that Illini basketball finds itself down just 4 at halftime of this game at Maryland. While Maryland found itself the beneficiary of a number of foul calls, the Maniscalco flop gifted the Illini 3 sorely-needed points. Maryland also played inspired basketball in the first half, though their turnover tendencies were still in evidence.
However, we can also expect that Stoglin will not shoot as well in the second half, and that the offensive adjustments made midway through the first half should bear more fruit as the game wears on.
Key stat #1:
Fouls: Illinois 11, Maryland 7. Illinois suffered from a large number of early foul calls. The refs appeared to become less whistle-happy as the half went on, though I certainly felt that Maryland committed a number of fouls under the basket that went uncalled. Expect this to even out in the second half.
Key Stat #2
Points: DJ Richardson 2, James Padgett 9
Not gonna happen in the second half.
Revised prediction: Illinois 68, Maryland 61.
