Illinois 17, Wisconsin 7 Halftime thoughts – Bungled punts that don’t really hurt you (and may have actually helped!)

Some random musings from halftime of the Fighting Illini – Badgers football matchup.
-Nice to see Donovan Young get some postive results on the our of the Illinois backfield. He’s had a rough freshman year, but it’s good to be reminded of his enormous potential. The second TD run was a thing of beauty-picked his way to the outside and used his speed to get the score.
-The defense continues to stand tall. Though Wisconsin managed some long completions, our pass rush was able to get pressure on Russell Wilson and squelched much of the Badger rushing attack. Wisconsin has just 3.6 yards per carry. Bielema is learning what the rest of the B1G knows-despite the horrific special teams play and inconsistent offense, this defense is the real deal.
-Did the botched punt help or hurt? This may be one of those rare occurrences where a special teams miscue may have helped. If the punt succeeded, Wisconsin has the ball on the Illinois 40 or closer. The chances of them scoring with 3 minutes left is quite high. In that case, Illinois heads to the half leading either 14-7 or 14-3. As it stands, the lead is 17-7. The quick score by the Badgers gave us the chance to answer.
ROT. Reilly is making his bid for more time. He seems to be the more effective of the two QB’s this game.

We’re undefeated when we score in the first half. Let’s do this thing.
