The Fighting Illini coughed up yet another game, this time to Penn State. There certainly could be a lot to say about this game; the stout effort of the defense, the lackluster offense, the weather. But to me, the thing that stands out is the atrocious effort on special teams. The Illini flubbed two field goals and once again had a punt blocked. This is the second consecutive week that the Illini had that happen. You’d think after last week, some focus would have been shifted to the special teams; after all, one could argue that the kicking and return game had been the primary reason for at least one, if not both of our previous losses. However, the Illini demonstrated their incompetence in this area yet again on Saturday. How often does a team get a punt blocked on consecutive weeks? I’d expect rarely. How often does a team also fumble a field goal snap in the same game? I’d think the chances are vanishingly small. This team reminds me of some of the Tepper teams-great defenses which were victimized by incompetence in other areas. It’s sad to watch.
