10/23/11 Morning Dump- a quick rundown of Illini related stories from around the media landscape

A tough day yesterday: Football loses and volleyball drops one at Nebraska, their first loss of the year.

Illinois rally falls short in 4th.

The offensive meltdown combined with special teams’ flubs and an equally slow-starting defense exacerbated the headaches. Despite two solid weeks of practices, coach Ron Zook said the team inexplicably has entered games too tight.

“You wish you had something to hang it on,” he said.

If this keeps up, the fans are going to be hanging it on Zook, I would think. Many already are.

Illinois QB Nathan Scheelhaase says Illini have hit ‘ground zero’

linebacker Jonathan Brown said. “But a lot of guys experienced something they’ve never experienced before. We were 6-0. We had a chance to make a run at the BCS national championship. Now people are starting to realize what’s at stake.”

Who really thought the Illini had a chance at the BCS title? No one I know. At least the players are confident.

Nebraska sprinted to a 5-1 lead and later rattled off seven straight points behind the serving of Lauren Cook to grab a 22-9 stranglehold.

“When Lauren was serving during that stretch, the crowd was ridiculous. Deafening.” Cook said. “I think that definitely took some energy out of Illinois.”

Let’s hope we get a chance to return the favor, perhaps in the NCAA’s. The Illini do not get Nebraska at home this year. The loss drops Illinois to 2nd place in the B1G at 9-1.

And now for some more optimistic news:

The teams have been mixed up in practice, but Griffey said he knows for sure he won’t be on the same side as center Meyers Leonard on Sunday.

“Man we play so well together, he’s so fun to play with. He can pass the ball so well out of the post,” Griffey said. “We always say coach never puts us on the same team because it’s never fair.

Orange and Blue Scrimmage is on Sunday. Feels like Christmas morning! We’ll be covering it live starting at 3.55 pm CT today (Sunday) That’s kind of an interesting quote from Griffey there. Seems like our frontcourt is gelling more that expected. Should be fun to watch.
