Writing Illini is back!

Hello, fellow Illini fans!  I’m pleased to announce that I’ve taken over the editing duties here at Writing Illini.  I’m hoping to keep this blog a little more active than it’s been the past few months.  We’re going to cover the big two revenue sports (football and basketball), but I’m also hoping to pay some well-deserved attention to the non-revenue sports, like volleyball (#1 in the nation, baby!) and other olympic sports.  From what I understand, a lot of those kids are going pro in something other that sports.  We’re going to feature interviews with Illini sports figures from the past and present, extensive game analysis, and recruiting coverage with a focus on the Chicago area.  I’m looking forward to opportunity to interact with you.  If you have any story ideas or features you’d like to see added, please let me know.  I’m also looking for columnists to write on a recurring basis.  If you’re interested, please let me know.

About me: I’m Joe.  From Chicago.   I grew up in Central Illinois.  One of my earliest memories is sitting in the back seat of my Dad’s ’74 Mercury Comet (a poor man’s Mustang) listening to the Fighting Illini football team march their way to Pasadena.  Along the way they became the only team to beat every other Big Ten team in a single season, a feat which to date has not been duplicated and probably never will.  That 83-84 academic year was a great time to gain Illini-consciousness (hopefully I will devise a German word for that).  The men’s basketball team was phenomenal as well, leaving me in tears at the corrupt conclusion in Lexington:

A few years later, however, we had another great year for the Illini.

And of course, these guys:

The years since have provided joy and pain, though I suppose we always remember the pain.  I guess I could be wrong about that, though.
