Illinois’ sophomore Meyers Leonard, who played in all but one of the team’s games last season as a true freshman and is likely to start this season as a true sophomore, has been selected as a finalist for a spot on the roster that will represent USA Basketball at the FIBA U19 World Championships in Latvia from June 30th to July 10th.

There are 13 finalists, and USA Basketball will take 12 players, which they will announce this Thursday.

Leonard, a 7-foot center, now will stay at the U.S. Olympic Training Center for an extended training camp. The finalists will travel to Latvia for the FIBA U19 World Championships that run June 30-July 10.

The 13 finalists include two other Big Ten players: Michigan State guard Keith Appling and Michigan guard Tim Hardaway, Jr.
