Day 6 of the Week of Recruits series brings us to the last freshman of the group, Mike Shaw. Shaw was a recruit whom many predicted would end up in the Big East, but thanks to some of Jerrance Howard’s recruiting magic, Illinois managed to keep him in the state.
Name: Mike Shaw
Position: Power Forward
Weight: 220 lbs
High School: De La Salle Institute, Chicago, Illinois
Player Position Rank: ESPN: 15 Rivals: 9 Scout: 14
Player Overall Rank: ESPN: 89 Rivals: 59 Scout: 48
Other Schools of Interest: De Paul, Marquette, Notre Dame, West Virginia
Strengths: Shaw is a combination forward who can play under the basket or out on the wing. He can attack the rim from both sides and finish over or around defenders with his length and athletic ability. Shaw has excellent body control for a player his size. Shaw can rebound in and out of his area and crashes the offensive class with great urgency.
Areas for Improvement: Shaw still needs to work on his shooting off the dribble. He also tends to settle for jumpers at times instead of crashing the basket. Defensively, he occasionally gambles for steals and gets in foul trouble.
Early Thoughts: Shaw has tremendous upside and, with a little work on some details, could be a dominant force on the court for his entire Illinois career.
