Incoming freshman Nnanna Egwu plans to immediately challenge Meyers Leonard for the starting center role.

Week of Recruits, Day 3: Nnanna Egwu

Writing Illini’s Week of Recruits series continues for the third day as we take a look at incoming center Nnanna Egwu.

Player Profile

Name: Nnanna Egwu

Position: Center

Height: 6′-10″

Weight: 220 lbs

High School: Saint Ignatius College Prep, Chicago, IL

Player Position Rank: ESPN: 10 Rivals: 14 Scout: 8

Player Overall Rank: ESPN: 69 Rivals: 97 Scout: 30

Other Schools of Interest: Northwestern, Oregon State, Purdue, Wisconsin

Strengths: Egwu has impressive speed for his size, with many scouts calling it guard-like. Egwu is also a strong defender and noted shot blocker. Egwu is comfortable under the basket, but also has a strong jump shot which makes him a scoring threat as far as 12 feet from the basket.

Areas for Improvement: Egwu needs to bulk up a bit to be able to hold his own against the other bruising centers in the Big Ten. While bulking up sounds as simple as hitting the gym and adjusting your diet, Illini fans who followed Mike Tisdale as he tried to gain weight know that, especially for the tall players with high metabolisms, weight does not come easily or quickly.

Early Thoughts: Egwu has the potential to immediately impact the Illini, perhaps more so than any other incoming freshman. If he can put on some weight, he will challenge Meyers Leonard right away for the starting center role and regardless of who starts, Egwu is sure to see the court every game.
