Thoughts after the first quarter:

Illinois needs to work on converting on third down opportunities. Aside from the opening play, the Illini have done an excellent job of containing this potent Wolverine offense. The Illini have already forced 3 turnovers in the first quarter, including two huge interceptions. These early slip ups could get into Denard Robinson’s head and cause him to make some mistakes later on in the game. Don’t be surprised if Michigan puts in Tate Forcier if Robinson continues to struggle.

Thoughts at the half:

What a first half. These two teams have set a Michigan record for points scored in the first half at the Big House. Robinson is on pace to break Juice Williams’ record for quarterback yardage that he set two years ago at Michigan. Here is a scary statistic: at the half, Denard Robinson has completed only 7 passes, yet he has 262 passing yards. That is almost 40 yards per completion! Illinois is on pace to break its record for total points scored in a game. However, Illinois needs to step up on defense in the second half. Their 3 forced turnovers are impressive, but they still gave up 400 yards in the first half! That is more yards than Purdue got all last game. Illinois knew that Michigan would be a high-scoring opponent, but no one predicted that it would be this high. Scheelhaase, Dimke, and Ford have all had impressive first halves, and they need to continue to do so to keep Illinois in this game. At the rate things are going, the game will come down to the final drive. Luckily Illinois will start the half with the ball.

Thoughts after the third quarter:

The hectic scoring of the first half has vanished as Illinois’ offense came out of the locker room and again struggled to finish its drives. Despite two drives that started in Michigan’s half of the field, Illinois was not able to score in the third  quarter. Michigan has also struggled to finish drives, but Illinois’s defense has had two costly penalties that allowed Michigan to continue its drives when they did get stops. Illinois needs to finish off this drive to tie the game up and then play smarter on defense to get Robinson off of the field.

Final Score: Michigan 67, Illinois 65

Final thoughts on the game:

This one hurts. Illinois let Michigan steal this game with too many costly penalties on defense. While both teams shined offensively, the Illinois defense was expected to contain the Wolverines better than they did. This game surely broke several Big Ten records, and I will talk about it in detail in Monday’s recap. The disappointing outcome aside, this is one of the most exciting games I have ever watched and it is sure to be all over the sports world in the coming days. For now, Illinois needs to turn its focus on Minnesota as it is still one game away from bowl eligibility.

Check back in Monday for a full recap of the game and enjoy the rest of the weekend.
