As announced earlier tonight at the Eastern Iowa Airport, 6’8’’ forward Jarrod Uthoff of Thomas Jefferson High School in Cedar Rapids, Iowa has verbally committed to play for Bo Ryan and the Wisconsin Badgers.
Uthoff (who looks a little like Elliott Smith in some pictures) had scholarship offers from Illinois and 12 other schools, and recently trimmed his final list to the Illini, Wisconsin, Iowa, Iowa State, Northern Iowa and Butler.
Illinois seemed like a bit of a long shot for Uthoff, whom some thought would stay in state and play for Iowa or Iowa State. Uthoff described Wisconsin’s style of play as “the best fit” for his game.
During his final recruiting chat for the News Gazette earlier today, Jeremy Warner expressed his opinion that Illinois was trailing the Iowa schools for Uthoff but would have loved to add the Iowa prospect.
Illini fans disappointed by Uthoff’s decision should take solace in the following song from the late great Smith, especially when thinking about the last few years of Illini basketball recruiting under Head Coach Bruce Weber.
Illinois recently offered a scholarship to Uthoff’s Iowa Barnstormers AAU teammate and fellow Class of 2011 recruit Josh Oglesby, a 6’5’’ guard from Washington High School in Cedar Rapids.
Of course, the Illini are still waiting to hear from De La Salle senior forward Mike Shaw, whom Werner thinks is leaning towards Illinois or Michigan State and should have a decision by August or September.
